National Public Lands Day is the nation’s largest volunteer effort to improve public lands across the country. This Saturday, the Shenandoah National Park has plans to help celebrate. “It's National Public Lands Day, and we're also celebrating the CCC, that’s the Civilian Conservation Core’s 75th anniversary as well as having the National Parks America tour here that day,” said Karen Beck-Herzog of the Shenandoah National Park. Park staff is looking for volunteers to spend the morning picking weeds in the Big Meadows, helping to preserve park resources. “25% of what you see here at Shenandoah, while it's green, doesn't actually belong here, so we are looking for volunteers to come to a very special place, and to help us preserve and protect that by taking out those exotic species,” said Beck-Herzog.
Upon arrival, volunteers will be given breakfast, a t-shirt and then a brief overview on what greens can stay, and what must go. Staff will explain why the park cares about certain species, and why you should care about them if your in your own yard.
“All visitors to Shenandoah can come and get into the park for free to celebrate this place as a public land little bigger this year,” said Beck-Herzog.
The event is free and open to the public, and the first one hundred volunteers will receive a free pass into any national park.
