News - Justice Finally Served: Inmate Richard Cooey Was Executed At 10:28 AM This Morning

Today, October 14, 2008, justice for Wendy Offredo and Dawn McCreery was finally served: Richard Cooey was executed by lethal injection at 10:28 AM this morning. (”Reporting from Lucasville: Richard Cooey executed“) In 1986, Richard Cooey “kidnapped Wendy Offredo, 21, and Dawn McCreery, 20, [two University of Akron students] after disabling their car by dropping a chunk of concrete on it from a highway overpass. [Cooey and an accomplice] choked and beat the women to death after repeatedly raping them, then carved X’s in their abdomens.” (”Weight Gain Not Intentional To Dodge Execution, Inmate Says“) Cooey was rightfully sentenced to death, and after 22 years in prison, we are pleased that the Supreme Court and the State of Ohio made the right decision and did not prevent his execution.
After gaining approximately 70 pounds in prison, Cooey (at 5 feet, 7 inches tall and 267 pounds) claimed that he was too fat for an execution by lethal injection to be humane. Magna Sententia requires that all people take responsibility for their actions, and after what Cooey did to Wendy and Dawn, his “too-fat-to execute” attempt to avoid the consequences of his actions was quite appalling. If Cooey had any form of conscience, the terror-filled and excruciating deaths he brought upon Wendy and Dawn would cause the discomfort of his own death to be of little concern to him.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of Wendy and Dawn, who undoubtedly will relive the painful memories of the past today. We hope that Cooey’s execution brings them closure and a sense of justice.

P.S. For those of you who do not believe in capital punishment, this man had no remorse. His last words were, “You (expletive deleted) haven’t cared what I had to say for the past 22 years. Why would you care what I have to say now?”
