Sports - Chicago Cubs Hold Rally Before Potentially Historic Playoff Run

The Chicago Cubs have their highest hopes in years that this is finally the time that their curse ends. With the best record in the National League, a strong batting lineup and pitching staff from top to bottom, the Cubs are actually the favorites to win their first pennant in 63 years. Whether that translated to the Cubs first World Series title in 100 years is unknown. But defying their curse and the constant worries that the bottom will fall out again, the Cubs fans are ready to celebrate and cheer the Cubs on as the playoffs begin. To that end, the Cubs will hold a rally this afternoon to kick things off. The Cubs will hold a pre-playoff rally, as do most teams that make the playoffs. In the Cubs case, their rally will be held at Daley Plaza beginning at noon Central time. The Cubs rally will last from noon to 12:45 p.m. Central, as hundreds of their loving, long suffering fans will hear the Cubs players and coaches give brief speeches to get ready for the playoffs.
Not only will Cubs personnel be at the rally, other Chicago icons will join them. Chicago-born comedian Jim Belushi will host the rally, with appearances from Governor Rod Blagojevich, Mayor Richard Daley, hall of famer Billy Williams, ex-Cubs third baseman Ron Santo, and Cubs chairman Crane Kennedy.

The notoriously passionate Cubs fans started gathering for the rally at 9:45 a.m. Central time, dressed in their best Cubs gear. The Cubs come into the playoffs with their best record in decades, trying to rebound from being swept in three games by the Arizona Diamondbacks in last year's division series.

The Cubs will begin the postseason on Wednesday afternoon with Game 1 of the NLDS against the Los Angeles Dodgers and Manny Ramirez. If the Cubs win the best of 5 series, they will play for their first pennant in six decades against either the Philadelphia Phillies or their NL Central rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers.

Game 1 between the Cubs and Dodgers, featuring Cubs ace Ryan Dempster going up against the Dodgers Derek Lowe, begins at 6 p.m. Eastern, 5 p.m. Central.
