Most New Orleans-area schools are expected to open today. Here is a breakdown of school openings announced Sunday.
--- Jefferson Parish ---
All public schools in Jefferson Parish will be open today, with the following exceptions based on continuing power outages: Jefferson Elementary, Jefferson; Ford Middle, Avondale; Rillieux Elementary, Waggaman; Strehle Elementary, Avondale; and Grand Isle School, closed indefinitely.
Two parochial schools, St. Agnes and St. Catherine of Sienna, will be closed.
--- Plaquemines ---
All Plaquemines Parish public schools will open today, except for Belle Chasse Middle, South Plaquemines Elementary, South Plaquemines High and Boothville-Venice Elementary.
--- Orleans ---
The majority of Orleans Parish traditional and charter schools, for both the Orleans Parish School Board and the Recovery School District, will resume classes today. Students will have a full day of instruction and be released at their normal dismissal times.
Bus transportation will be available. The district suggests that parents who have private transportation drop off and pick up students both today and Tuesday. This will help buses avoid delays in some neighborhoods that are still in the midst of cleanup efforts. If parents prefer to use the bus, they may send students to the normal pickup point for bus transportation. If parents have any questions about transportation today, they may call 504.365.0310 for further information.
The only schools not opening today are: all Algiers Charter School Association-operated schools, which will be opening Wednesday; Edna Carr High, opening Wednesday; Harte Elementary, opening Wednesday; Milestone SABIS Academy of New Orleans, opening Tuesday; Martin Luther King Charter, opening date uncertain; N.O. Science & Math Charter High, opening Tuesday.
Three Catholic schools in New Orleans -- St. Joan of Arc, St. Leo the Great and Mount Carmel -- will not reopen today.
In addition, five Catholic schools in St. John the Baptist Parish will not open today: Ascension of Our Lord, Our Lady of Grace, St. Joan of Arc, St. Peter and St. Charles High.
