"Natalie Dylan" is auctioning her virginity, according to several news outlets, including CityNews.ca out of Toronto. Natalie is a 22-year-old student from San Diego. She holds a bachelor's degree in women's studies. She hopes to pay for her master's degree by putting up her virginity for sale. As she explains, "we live in a capitalist society. Why shouldn't I be able to capitalize on my virginity?" Natalie attempted to sell her virginity on ebay, but ebay refused. Now her virginity is up for sale at the Moonlight Bunny Ranch. Although she knows that her Virginity for Sale project will create controversy, she is ready. Her most important priority is financial stability. Although her mother and fourth-grade teacher disapprove of this project, the owner of the bidding venue approves. "Why lose it to some guy in a Toyota when you can use it to pay for your education?"
Although I would never do something like this, at least she wants to use her virginity for a noble cause. Yet it makes me wonder if the end justifies the means. Surely there are other options available.
Virginity for Sale: Other Bizarre Auctions
The Virginity for Sale project is one of many bizarre auctions I have encountered. In January 2007, an Australia man sold his life on ebay. The package included his name, phone numbers, life, and lessons on 'how to be me.' He also promised to teach the winning bidder how to surf, fire twirl, and perform handstands.
Reminiscent of the Virginity for Sale project, I ran into a woman a few months ago who planned to sell her breasts on ebay. She placed the starting bid at $12,000. She was using the money to raise awareness for breast cancer research. Although I admire her compassion and dedication, I thought there were better ways to achieve her goals.
